Here in Indianapolis, Indiana, this is set to be the 8th night this winter season with a low temperature of 0 Degrees or Colder. The Most Sub Zero Lows in a winter season on record most recently occurred during the winter of 1976-1977, with a whopping total of 24 Sub Zero Nights That Year. We are set to experience the most sub zero nights for a winter season since the winter of 1993-1994 in Indianapolis according to the weatherman on a local news station. I realize that 8 nights for a winter season is not a big deal for areas further north but for this far to the south, this is considered to be a severe winter for this latitude and longitude(we usually see 4 or 5 nights of 0 or colder for an average winter season, and we still have the rest of January and all of February to get through before winter is over in meteorologist's terms)
From my office NWS Grand Forks North Dakota... Grand Forks has had 21 days since Dec 1st....when the high temperature has been below zero (F). This is second all time to date in the number dating to the late 1880s. So indeed this cold has been very persistent.
Interesting. Cold in many locations. Like I said in a previous post, some people bypass the Midwest, Great Lakes and interior because they think it's always that cold. lol Even the cold spots have impressive numbers/stats.
We got about 2 inches (5cm) of additional snow last night. Hard to tell exactly since snow fell atop snow that was already on the ground. Roads are snow covered again, at least the side streets like the one I'm on. Hasn't even been plowed.
No snow is melting fast down in the south. Tomm. best chance for good melt. It's single digits in northern Alabama. But extreme is actually sub zero there so they are close but wont get to Top 5.
Its best to clear a spot after every snowfall. There's 2 spots I measure which is the open most area and I wipe off the board after every snowfall.
