I think homicide rate has little to do with capital punishment.

Death penalty is not the reason for high murder rate. Poverty, no assistance when in trouble, and depression are major causes. Louisiana ranks high on all 3, sadly.

Look up poverty rate and homicide. There's your correlation.

I'm not sure on the %, I don't tend to trust YouGov polls as they seem not to always be very accurate. It certainly is not a popular opinion here though. Michael Gove, our new minister of Justice reportedly said in an interview a while ago that he supported the reinstatement of hanging in the UK.. he got very bad publication for that.

I think so too - which makes capital punishment even more unnecessary, as it does nothing to solve the problem. It's all about vengeance, and an eye for an eye. Nothing else.

I didn't say it was the reason. But you said Detroit was the first place to abolish it and has the highest murder rate in this country, kind of seemed like you were trying that was the reason for it.

Trust me, if there's anyone that knows that poverty and lower education is the main reason for higher crime it's me.

Nope, try again. West Virginia, for example, is poorer than the national average but has a lower-than-average murder rate.

It must be the blacks then.

There is a very obvious correlation between crime and poverty - murder is no exception. Taking West Virginia as one example to prove a point is silly - especially considering its rural nature.

Iowa has the lowest murder rate in the US and hasn't had death penalty since 1965. Where are you getting your facts from? Why are you trying to so hard to act like a typical Southerner?
Just because I support death penalty for worst of the worst doesn't mean I'm a southerner.

Most states got rid of it because of the extensive appeals process, which makes it very expensive. It should have not so many appeals once conclusive DNA evidence is obtained. Even in the northeast, most places got rid of it in the last decade or so.
