I walk to the bus stop, take the bus to UCF, then walk to class from there. Walking directly to my class from my apartment takes about 25 minutes, mostly on roads without sidewalks.
Well yes, but if you ever have sex then it isn't just to stop getting someone pregnant (if you sleep with a girl) but condoms can protect against a whole lot of nasty STD's... I really can't fathom how anyone could have a problem with using contraceptives in this day & age

That sounds like when I lived at FGCU, though I lived on campus so walking to class was only like 12-15 minutes.

It depends on which part of Long Island you lived in. Queens, Brooklyn, and Nassau ever get them, although I have seen numbers like 2F or 3F there.
I grew up in central Suffolk County and last few times I got subzero temps was 2004, 2009, 2014, and twice in 2015. Also 2011 and 2005 hit 0F exactly on PWS. Closest weather station to me was HWV.
The Pine Barrens get them every year. In fact Westhampton Beach (FOK) even hit -15F on Jan 17, 2009 and it hit -13F this February, according to Nowdata.
Needless to say, your point still holds: LI doesn't exactly have brutal winters.

Isn't that typical of any city with a desirable center? Some people want to live a bustling city center and have no use or interest for lots of space.

I grew up in NW Suffolk, it's possible I didn't realize I was getting subzero temperatures. But Farmingdale didn't record subzero if I remember correctly. We hit just above 0°F every other year as you but not negative.

I see. Farmingdale has dropped below 0F on only one occasion: Jan 4, 2014.
Islip hasn't gone below 0F since 1988 but it did hit 0F exactly in Jan 2014.
The closest station to me was Shirley (KHWV), which dropped below zero in 2005, 2009, 2011, 2014, and 2015. However, 2004 only hit 1F.
I get less and less interested with my job everyday. I think it's time to look elsewhere.
