Here in suburban Columbus, Ohio ...
(Disclaimer: I don't have average temps or any other data in front of me ... these observations are simply from living here for 35 of my 41 years.)
Spring: March 15-third week of May (Add: It is not uncommon to have highs in the low 50s as late as Mother's Day, and then two weeks later have highs in the 90s. Similarly, it can be either snowing or in the 70s in the middle of March here.)
Summer: Third week of May-Third week of September (Usually in mid-September, we get the first of the real strong cold fronts that can drop the temp 20-30 degrees in a day, although we still can have hot days after that point into early October. Jackets usually start coming out in the evenings by the end of September, and the humidity drops appreciably around that time.)
Fall: Third or fourth week of September-Thanksgiving.
Winter: Thanksgiving-March 15.
In summary, it's really only reliably warm here from about the middle of May until the middle of September. I can remember years where the nights have gotten down into the 40s as early as Sept. 15 or so, and last year, the highs were in the 80s in the second week of October before a huge cold front swept in and plunged us into the 50s and 60s, after which we began the usual descent toward winter temperatures. Rarely do we have what I'd consider all that warm a day after about October 15, although if that does happen, it's usually ahead of a front that that time of the year can produce some major storms and dramatic changes in temperature.
None of the seasons here have reliable start and end dates.
Spring: Can occur any time between late February and early June.
Summer: Can occur any time between late April and early October.
Midsummer: Very rare, but possible in July, August is usually just as warm, but is also too wet for heatwaves.
Autumn: Can occur any time between late June and early January.
Winter: Can occur any time between late October and early May.
Midwinter:May not occur at all, possible between December and March.
