That's a silly way to word to it, most people murdered are murdered by someone in their social circle, not at random though the random ones are make headlines more. If the average Londoner moved to NYC would his chance of being murdered increase by 4 to 5 times? I doubt it.
A few New Years ago, nine people were shot in New York City. None died, as drunk people have bad aim. A couple did die for a car accident (driving drunk on an expressway at 100 mph ends badly). Another drunk guy got angry at the crowd he was with at the bar, left, got into his car and drove into the crowd standing outside the bar. No one died, but several were injured.
Well, statistics don't lie: 4 to 5 times as many people are murdered in New York each year than London. (Same population.)

The weapon is a kitchen knife and the homicide carried out during a weekend. The perpetrator and victim are old acquaintances, middle-aged, living alone, excluded from working life, alcoholic men who have several previous violent crime convictions. Could the typical murder be more stereotypical? I hardly believe so. It's like saying that a Northern Irish is a terrorist and the next second he detonates a car bomb. (Came to mind as I read the foreign ministry UK travel warning). It said nothing about Leeds or Scotland, only terrorism and NI.

Cities with worse gang violence issues likely have an even lower median age. 60% were black, 57% died from a gunshot. Yes, IIRC only a third of all murders are carried out with a firearm. After alcoholics in delirium killling each other the next most common motive is jealousy or other romantic motive, like killing your ex. Example: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sello_mall_shooting
Only 10-15% of murders are related to some kind of criminal activity, and only 1% being murder-robberies.
I looked at your link from SF, and noticed especially in Oakland that a high percentage of the victims were under 20.
