just watched Australia get defeated by New Zealand. Great ground in Dharamasala, good game unfortunately is wasn't a win. Well done NZ. only 6 days until AFL starts this year, so excited. Tipping top 6: Hawthorn, Sydney, Fremantle, Richmond, Geelong, WCE.

Talking about petrol, how is it that although oil has fallen in price from well over $100/barrel to currently about $40/barrel that petrol prices have only fallen from about 140p/litre to about 99p/litre now which is still expensive compared to many countries

Greedy motherfu**ing oil companies

Don't even get me started on Fuel Duty which brings in billions of £s for our government each year and is about 58p/litre, PLUS 20% VAT so about 80% of that price is going straight to the government. F**ing pigs

It takes time. The petrol now used is bought for $100 barrel and the process of refining it to petrol doesn't get any cheaper, only the raw material. Actually the oil companies are lowering prices in advance as the $40 oil bought now comes out as petrol and diesel only in the future, depending on how much reserves your oil companies keep.

Yeah, good point. 75% of the petrol price is taxes here, and that doesn't change when oil prices fall either.

£1.01 is the current price here.

(It would also be great if we'd agree to use one single currency in this thread. Naturally USD, as the forum is American. Confusing when we are switching between €, £, USD, CAD, AUD and sometimes SEK...)

True, I hadn't thought of that.. back in 2000 petrol was as low as 70p/litre here

I wonder what the fuel duty and taxes on petrol are in other countries, surely the UK and Finland must have the highest taxes on fuel in the world..

Gas taxes. Much of your petrol cost is from taxes, your petrol tax doesn't change much. Our gas taxes are low, and the price dropped 50-55% only a bit less than the oil barrel price change. Current price here is 47¢/L, less than your fuel tax.

How much is oil/gas taxed at in the US? I'm guessing it is way below ours and then the 20% VAT added on too

Edit - Jesus 47 cents/litre? When you factor in exchange rate that is just ridiculous.. I would be driving everywhere if fuel was that cheap!!

Depends on the state; here it's 12¢/L. So about 25% of the cost of gasoline is in tax here, which is still over double the usual sales tax.

Or drive a more gas guzzling car. My old car is rather inefficient. I average about 25 mpg even though I do mostly highway / rural road driving; or 15 L per 100 miles. Anyone driving a Prius these days is barely paying for gasoline.

I guess the US is much larger so longer distances between places means more driving.. I could only dream of fuel that cheap!

My car averages about 40mpg for a petrol car so I don't think that is too bad.. old diesel car did as well as 55mpg sometimes

Don't even get me started on the sugar tax that will be introduced in the UK from 2018, don't even get me started It will be between 18p-24p per litre of drink depending on how much sugar is in it, starting from drinks with 5grams per 100ml

And this is from a supposedly right wing government we have at the moment as well!
