An extraordinary event occurred in Northern Chile on July 8, in which the coastal city of Iquique broke its all-time record high… in the middle of the winter!! It recorded 33.4ºC, which seems quite meek, but remember that the northern coast of Chile is very steady, oceanic and influenced by the cold Humboldt Current. It also broke its monthly high by about 10ºC, which further shows how incredible this event was.
The cause was katabatic winds that blew from an over-cooled Andean Plateau that had received some very rare snowfalls (the area is extremely dry). The winds were quite strong, and caused a sandstorm and heavy damage. I guess it was not foehn wind, but a Santa Ana like situation, which is also known for provoking abnormally high and off-season temps in coastal California. However, it seems to be much rarer in the Atacama Desert, hence such massive record, albeit not unheard. Iquique had already recorded 31.0ºC in August, even though it never reached 25ºC in September!
You can see from this satellite image how the sand blew off the coast:
Yep, that freaky sequence of daily highs in Iquique is correct: Resumen synop
Arica "only" recorded 27.9ºC but it still suffered a severe sandstorm:
^^ very interesting. It seems like something similar happened there in August one year - average high is 18.0C but record high is 31.0C (average high in September is 18.8C and the record high is only 23.4C).

-10C in 850hpa over some areas of Southern Brazil?:
some Inhabitants of Southern Countries may be ready for very cold conditions this coming week:
GFS now lowered snowfall in Southern Brazil, and increased it on Southern Buenos Aires province, with even some coastal places like Viedma receiving snow, appoint snowstorms on Southwestern Rio negro Province, most of Neuquen with crazy 100cm.
I like that forecast, for sure But there is still too early to make a solid prediction. So we'll see. Meanwhile we can celebrate the fresh snow in the needy ski resorts of Patagonia. It started today but they will have more in the next days fortunately.

Any other Southern Hemisphere folk keeping a frost count for this winter?
At 22 so far, with -1.5C this morning. Coldest has been -3C, with most between OC and -1C.
Frost isn't rare here. I keep track of snow, not frost.
