Ok, so it's usually a ridge/trough in the middle of the country and the opposite on the coasts? I prefer the warm one of course, but especially in April & May I hate long cool, wet stretches, desperate for warmth by then.

Not always. it's more about the physical setup rather than the location. It can look like this from Sept 2016.. Ridge West coast, Trough over Rockies, Ridge Southeast, Trough is in Northeast.

But things are blocking upstream so the jet stream tightens up

I see it, breezy too there. While Sun and 60s would be nice to feel for 1 day, I prefer to be in Kansas City today. Sun and 30s.

Also, has Florida panhandle passed 40s today? Warmer in Southern Maine.

Omega blocks are most annoying in spring, when they set up and cause cold rainy weather for weeks at a time

Now I'm mad. I don't care its at 3000 feet... Stop snowing in the south! lol

Snowing above 2500' in Georgia today!

Lets take a look at the 850mb temps and 500mb height pattern

Look at the freezing line at 5000'. Off the Florida coast there.

I see why its snowing above 2500' now with some precip around inside the trough. Wonder what discussions are saying from down there.

I also see why Florida pan handle isn't passing 40s today. Interesting. Aside from the clouds as one reason, its also cold aloft.

Meanwhile,
over the NC mtns we have been seeing the snow levels drop, now down
to roughly 3800 feet based on a timely spotter report. Will have
to keep an eye on the snow level, with the possibility of needing
to expand the Winter Weather Advisory if accumulating snow makes
it down into the valleys late this afternoon while the moisture
remains deep. Wind will strengthen later this evening with the
departure of the low, and a Wind Advisory has effectively been
rolled into the Winter Weather Advisory over the high elevations.

I remember bringing it up a few times, did a search..

June 2017 we had the an Omega Block. Jet dipped in the NorthWest and Northeast
//www.city-data.com/forum/48395999-post532.html

Here comes the BUT....... In Spring I prefer one like mid April 2016. Ridge, not trough over us.

In short, Omega block is a blocked pattern thanks to the North Atlantic Blocking (NAO) and the Jet stream becomes like an accordion closing up over the U.S.

Question is... which Omega block do you prefer?
I like the May 2016 block and I'll tell you the reason. It produces storms into California and you know they need them. The Northeast can handle the trough and Texas can handle the heat. I much prefer a zonal flow though, everything is even keel then.

The current omega block is slightly different than May 2016 because the trough is a bit tighter and further west and more "accordian" movements. That's why I call it a "double omega". That's my unofficial term for it...

Another seasonably cool day here in Fort Worth, the high today is supposed to be around 60, maybe lower 60’s if we are lucky; currently I’m out to lunch of Mickey D’s, I probably will do more walking around outside the next few days as the weather down here looks to stay mild at least the next few days.
