^But yeah, that storm looks totally apocalyptic. Would love to be up there right now.
If you like this kind of weather, you would definitely enjoy Newfoundland.
About 4 yrs ago I made a road trip to St.John's (in late November) and was caught in one such massive storm system - just as it was starting.
I drove through it through whole island for about 10 hours (8 of which was through raging blizzard) to get to ferry. I've never seen so many cars in ditches in my life. Best Blizzard Drive ever
People who don't like cold don't need to be worried, as it's a small island, so it doesn't even get below -25C there. The storm was maybe -10C (if). So, it's a hot blizzard, which makes it more fun.
The breaking waves along the coast - with the foam disintegrating mid-air - that's a sight to behold. You don't see that on NatGeo...
If you live in some nearby state (PA,OH,NJ) it's most definitely worth a short ~one-day drive.
EDIT: We're currently also having a blizzard in North Dakota, though it's not as epic in terms of accumulation. Still, it has a nice bite to it (current wind-chill is -38F), so it's all good as don't have to drive anywhere

You guys get some epic blizzards too there but a lot of times its the wind the creates it and not too much accumulations. I saw some videos from there yesterday, nice.

Hate to be bearer of negativity but I think you're done with any snow chances this season. Right? Usually it would happen in January in the right pattern. Maybe you can still get some freezing temps though.

And that's a city used to a lot of snow!
Sick.

Pretty cold airmass still. problem isn't the sticking or air temp factor, its the amount and the speed. Too fast and too little qpf. Still should see couple inches.
1:25pm Map. NYC reporting Heavy Snow now with 1/8th mile visibility. Temp of 24° and Dew of 20°. Light WSW winds. Thumping away.
Sticking and accumulating fast here but see how narrow that band is? In and Out with this one,.
Still cold in Edmonton with -28°C at 1100h at the aiport. The last 10 days has been extremely cold. These are the temperatures in celsius from the airport site:
Yesterday was supposed to be 67 but only got to 54. Today was supposed to be rainy and 50's but is sunny and 66. The forecasters have botched the forecast two days in a row.
What happened is they were predicting the warm front to come through yesterday but it didn't do that until well past midnight. That warmed it up into the low 60's by the morning. Then the sky cleared with a north wind but the Texas sun is preventing a cool down right now and instead it's in the mid 60's. Tonight will be a different story with clear skies and lows in the 30's. They were mainly off with timing and that makes all the difference if a cold front comes through at night where there's no resistance or the day where it has to overcompensate for a strong Texas sun.

Not really expecting snow for the remainder of the season this year, but it can occur in February (accumulated 9 times in Feb since 1895). Alexandria got 3" in Feb 2010. I've seen non-accumulating snow in March.
I'm somewhat optimistic we'll see some decently cold temps over the remainder of winter, though it might not get below the 21F we saw in November. NOAA's 3-4 week forecast looks nice.

What models does CPC use to make these probability maps? Probably the CFSv2

Pretty awesome. Seems like the other station "only" got to -37.6, with no maxima below -30.
So, is the airport in a frost hollow or is the downtown area just generating a lot of localized heat? Or both?
I'm trying to get a sense of the local microclimates.
Mostly urban heat island. The airport site is comparable to other regional sites.
More importantly, Edmonton is the only Canadian city whose main site is not located at that city's airport. So I always prefer to use the airport site when comparing to other cities to make sure it's apples-to-apples.
PS. Environment Canada used to use the airport site when reporting Edmonton conditions but sometime after December 2009 when headlines were made by being "the coldest spot on Earth" at -46.1°C they switched to using the downtown site. I suspect somebody did not enjoy the negative publicity and coerced EC to make a change.
