Be glad this didn't hit in January..

I’d much rather it have hit in January. It’s supposed to be cold in winter. Hitting now means it’s just making it cold when it’s supposed to be mild and we’re all used to milder weather.

We had a freeze Wednesday, April 15 here in the Nashville area. Down to 30 F / -1 C in Nashville, about 28 F / -2 C in my neck of the woods. First freeze since March 8. That’s gotta be really rare, going over a month without a freeze in spring then having another. We had several days with highs in the 80s at the end of March and beginning of April, I wonder how many gardeners planted stuff only for it to be damaged or killed by the freeze?

Agree.

Check out the scene in Iowa this afternoon. Sun angle and Ground temps must not care.

I dunno why your complaining about your weather. Most people would rather contend with warm to hot weather over cold and snow this time of year......

I guess being in isolation is really starting to eat me alive lol. I can’t wait until all of these ridiculous restrictions are lifted and life regains a sense of at least quasi normalcy. A cold rain is likely later tonight and tomorrow in Indianapolis with temperatures well below average until later this weekend or early next week. Average temperatures for mid to late April are in the mid 60’s for highs and mid 40’s for lows in Indianapolis.

On average, March 29 using records from the last 30 years (1990-present). I used 30 years because that's an interval commonly used to make climate normals.

During that 30 year period, the range has been March 5 in 2016 to April 17 in 2018; the last freeze was on or after April 15 just 4 times, April 15 in both 1997 and 2008, April 16 in 2014, and April 17 in 2018.

13 of the 30 years had their last freeze in April, so an April freeze has a likelihood of a little less than half.

My grandfather's a long-time gardener, and he says that frost is a risk through April 15. Lined up perfectly this year.

There hasn't been a frost after April 17 since 1988 (April 20), after that since 1986 (April 23), and after that since 1910, which had our latest frost ever: April 25.

This may be a record for gap between latest and second-latest freeze spells. A "freeze spell" is a day or run of days where the low temperature is below freezing on all of them. This year, this gap was 38 days (March 8 to April 15).

2019's gap, for comparison, was 5 days (March 27 to April 1). I've put a few years of data in the spoiler tag.

Spoiler

2018 - 9 days (April 8 - April 17)
2017 - 7 days (a freeze spell from March 3-March 4 - a freeze spell from March 11-March 16)
2016 - 3 days (March 2 - March 5)
2015 - 20 days (f/s March 4-March 8 - f/s March 28-March 29)
