so far my green thumb is limited - what a rocky soil we have .....
...
QofB, I hear you. It may be even worse up here on our 40-50 degree steep slope we live on, trying to dig and plant. We've been at this a decade and every time I plant something new, it is an ordeal.
I highly recommend a decent pick axe, from L or HD: very good at humping out the rocks you will run into when digging planting holes. And, those rocks will simply turn/twist/dull a shovel.
CD also has a very good Garden forum, imo...

Generally, anything on a ridge is going to be rocky. We lived on one in Murphy and it was Rock City.
Valleys (bottom lands) and flat lands are completely different.

SS, I knew that, though land around W'ville is quite variable regardless of slope or alt. We lived for decades 40 mins NW of Times Square and we fought the rocks there, every dig.
I was just rec'd to QofB that she/her hub may quickly come to appreciate what a good plastic handle pick axe can do when digging a hole large enough to put a decent size shrub, tree or perennial in it.
Generalities, combined with the obvious, are what this board is, sometimes...
o man, forgot the tiara. but had a majestic experience. B.B. barn is a VERY nice place with super friendly people. they have great deals going on - end of the season, which is good !
tomorrow I am taking the big car to fit in as much as I can.
regarding the soil: most of my neighbors just built rectangles out of wood, filled them up with good soil and planted all their things in there. That's something we will consider.
B.B. Barn also has people who plant trees for you. maybe I should let them deal with it ?
I can do a lot myself, but digging in that dirt ... I would rather pay someone
but, again, B.B. barns is a great place and only minutes from here. thanks for the good advice.
Euro Market is fun - my sister and I went there once, and were excited because the logo was in an Irish Shamrock-Lucky Charms font, and when we got inside, it was all Eastern European food - most of it had Russian labels, and they had a nice Russian DVD rental section. Totally unexpected, but lots of fun looking and we bought a few things to experiment with!
I just recently went to Amazing Savings on Sweeten Creek road. Being a salvage store I imagine the inventory changes pretty often, but they had a lot of various ethnic foods the day I was there.
funny they list the euro market to get stuff from asia. thanks. they may have some german things, too
World market in South Asheville and Euromarket( next to Aldi on Paton avenue) have lots of German items. And Aldi around Christmas time: Marzipan and many german traditional christmas cookie assortments and chocolates. I stock up -can not beat the prizes
