Ok. Since Banner Elk is brought up. I have to ask. Please don't take offense I am serious. I fell in love with BE years ago and even thought about moving there. However, a friend of mine who lived there for a year told me (and they were serious) that the mob, mafia, whatever "owned BE" or were very active there or whatever.
And yes, partly because I really didn't want to live in a town associated with big crime I just sort of put a big X on this idea. . .
Has anyone else ever heard of this?
That is hilarious! The mob owns Banner Elk, lol. I'm sure their are many, many opportunities there for typical mob activities...loansharking, construction rackets, prostitution, gambling, drugs...too funny.
there are reports of big time mobsters living in BE this is confirmed: Anthony Accetturo Sr for one.
And others. . . I was just inquiring if the entire town was somehow involved either in the past or currently .
Sounds like thats the source of the rumors.
Then there's this:
"During the time he lived in Banner Elk, local law-enforcement agencies were aware of Accetturo's reputation and kept a watchful eye on him, but they do not suspect him of engaging in any criminal activity in North Carolina, said Joseph Momier, the agent in charge of the Northwestern District of the State Bureau of Investigation."

Yes. carolinadawg2 his reputation as a mobster and member of one of the largest crime families.
Moving on, how about fishing? Not really in the streams but in those couple of small lakes in the Banner/Beech area.
Decent or a waste of time?
