I know nothing about fishing, but the biggest lake within reasonable proximity to Banner Elk is Watauga Lake. It's a TVA lake near Elizabethton (pronounced e-liz-a-BETH-ton), TN. Being in TN it might not be on your radar.

What about local microbrew or craft beers? Anything decent in the area to bring back (in bottles that is, not a growler)

I haven't had Appalachian (Boone) or Flat Top (Banner Elk) yet, but Lost Province in Boone makes several beers that I like a lot... not sure if which are available by bottle at retail, but you could probably find out on the various breweries' web sites. A great spot in the Banner Elk area to try several different local area beers in one place is the High Country Taproom at the entrance to Sugar Mountain.

Just thought it was some slight help, and obvious...
As for 'anything decent', esp microbrews, I find the question vague and the potential answers quite arbitrary and solely dependent on personal taste.

High Country Taproom is listed in the link.

The "not in a growler" was big part of the question. A taproom sells beer to go only in growlers(?)

Any opinions on the local winery/vineyard products? Any worth bring back to the wine fans back home?

(I'm a casual beer person but can't stand wine personally... but there are others in the house...)

I suggested the High Country Taproom only as a means to try a variety of local beers to save you a bit of time not having to go to a bunch of places that you might not like. This taproom sells only for on-site consumption.

As for wine, the three principal wineries in the area:

Banner Elk Winery
Grandfather Vineyard and Winery
Linville Falls Winery

My personal favorites are at Grandfather Vineyard.

Do the grocery stores have wine or will I have to go to the winery and pretend I give a crappola about wine to buy some and bring it back? So far, the "sparking muscato" from Grandfather Mtn. is the one I have a vote for.

Grocery Store. If you want something better than just ok, go to Erick's. You can get your local beers there too.

Erick's website says:

"We custom cut the cheese from wheels or blocks so you can get any quantity you need."

LOL!
