Oh yeah, and I heard about the camp grounds not letting people sleep in tents. I met a few guys that used to do that but the liability issue, so they kicked them out cause the cold.
socalsfinest, based on my experiences sleeping in a car in cold temps, there are times when you'll be surprised you woke up.
I'm originally from So Cal too, and I work out of my car every weeknight in Colorado. This occasionally involves taking long naps in strange locations without the car running.
There will be times when you'll sleep, wake up, and kind of get jolted because you can't see out of any of the windows (snow).
I don't know why OP posted that. 21F is really nothing, even with a 5F windchill.
Just be careful man. Nothing in Southern CA can prepare us for what we can get out here on the "Great" Plains.
