Last week I took a written examination for a administrative position for the State of Colorado. Although I have done really good in other tests I took, where I reached scores of 80% or more, I presumably scored only 20% in a test I considered very easy and felt very confident about.
As I really don't think I scored that low, I asked the person responsible for conducting the test to doublecheck. She replied that she did and that the result remains the same.
I really don't think everything is right. Either my testing # was mixed up or another error occured, but I cannot imagine to have scored so low.
Now I'm wondering if there's anything I can do about it. As it is affecting any future applications for State of Colorado jobs, as the result will be on file for a year. I would really like to ensure that the test was checked without errors.
Do you have any suggestions if and how I can appeal?
Let me tell you some hard truths most job seekers don't know. Testing seems fair and honest but in reality, it isn't. It's extremely biased and discriminatory. Or to be fair, I guess I should say the process CAN be biased and discriminatory.
Back in the heyday of affirmative action, one of the people in HR was a good friend of mine. Part of her job was administering employment tests and giving people the results. If you happened to be the flavor of the day, and you spelled your name correctly on the test paper, you passed. If you happened to be whatever they had too much of, you failed...or at least were penalized to the point that whomever they wanted got a better score than you did. Think about this...have you EVER been shown the test you failed and what you answered incorrectly?
I always want things to be fair and I was personally devastated when I learned this. But the truth isn't pretty. If they want you, you will pass. Those test scores are manipulated. If companies are doing honest testing, they would show you your test and tell you how it was scored.
How was the test administered? On a computer, or with a bubble sheet? I'm guessing somehow you skipped a question and all of your answers were one off, and that's why you scored so low. Doesn't mean you don't know the material, but you still didn't pass the test and will have to retake.
