On the salary you would need to live in Brooklyn or Queens. You may need roomates depending on your other bills, debts, etc.

I would most definitely get a roommate. I've been living off of 42k although it's been supporting me, my girlfriend and our dog, It's not fun. And this is in queens. It most definitely can be done as a lot of people do it on less. But if you want to actually enjoy your time off of work (because entry level finance[if it's in banking. if it's a financial analyst at some random company then nevermind) doesn't get much time away from work) you want to be able to enjoy it.

Also depends where in NYC. I know a lot of people living in Hoboken and Jersey City that work all over Manhattan.

45k is tight but doable. I'd budget at most 1000/month for rent (with roommates...) but aim for 700-800.

Good luck!

OP - don't bank on these bonus figures. the days when everyone in finance was getting 50 - 150% bonuses are long gone. the industry as a whole is hurting, and unless you're director level or above, it's highly unlikely that your bonus will be that great.

if you're entry level making 45K, your total comp if you do a good job (AND your department AND company as a whole do well), should be around the 60 - 65k mark. and this is best case. you could haul ass all year but if your company tanks or the area you're in suffers, you won't get much.

Congratulations on the new job.

Edgewater's pretty pricy. Weehawken would probably be more affordable for you.

Just wondering because I have an upcoming interview in NYC and the salary is starting with $45K + bonuses. With the cost of living, I don't know if this is okay so I wanted to ask "vets" of the workforce for their opinion.

Thanks.
My impression is that this is not much money for NYC, but, depending on the job, potential for advancement, possible bonus - it's better than staying in the soup line.

You will have to use your head in terms of how to commute and where to live. You are in the financial equivalent of driving an old 36 HP air cooled Bug on a So Cal freeway. You have enough horsepower to get by, but you will have to use your head and stay out of the fast lane...
