It is nice to know that there are other introverts out there. I use Linkedin to network with former employers. It is an effective tool.

I'm also an introvert. The job search is terribly hard for people like us who don't like to be in the spotlight, but always have to be "on" when looking for a job. Its so tiring. For me, LinkedIn saved me. Its easier to "network" behind a computer than it is to work a room full of strangers. I found my job on LinkedIn. I need to network more. But now that I'm employed, I've gotten out of the networking habit because I hate it so much.

It is easier to network behind a computer but it would still be difficult for me. The issue with me is I don't like to be in the spotlight so much that I don't even know how to go about LinkedIn. I don't like that you have to broadcast what you've done using your real name. Having a Facebook (I really only use it for my GPT sites or otherwise I would get rid of it) is bad enough and LinkedIn seems to be a Facebook for the workforce.

Use your first name and just last initial on Linkedin. Some people do that.

Does that lessen your chances of getting hired though?

Yes, it would. Use your whole name and a good professional picture. Send a personalized note to people in your industry you want to connect with. I'm a lousy networker, but this is how I got a job. I also have 2 great friends I made on LinkedIn.
