^^^ That. Go, be cordial, eat, have a beverage (but don't get drunk), wish the boss a happy holiday and thank him or her (and anyone else whose budget covered the cost of the event). Then go home. You don't have to stay all night or suck up to anyone, but a circumstance like this (where you are seen in comparison to your peers) is an opportunity to show you are an adult with adequate social skills, which can never hurt your future career.

It's no different than going to work and being around phony co-workers.

It's a social statement. "I'm a rebel" "I'm edgy" "You're stupid" "I'm a hip multicultural Millennial"

well Xmas parties are part of the work routine, in all jobs I've been. People - meaning bosses - will judge your behavior on occasions like these, so I try to drink one beer and make casual conversation. Of course there are people I dont know or like but I stick with the ones I like so I try to look on the bright side if you want. After a while, if it is possible for me to leave, I gladly do. but 30 min - 1hr I can cope. I treat it like a visit to the dentist; not necessarily pleasant but necessary.

Look on the bright side: they don't want to be at a Christmas party with you either.

My coworkers, from the freelancers to the CEO, all get plastered during our holiday parties (yes, there's more than one). No one cares who's being phony when there's an open bar still going at 2am.

I'm not going to mines this year. Yes people did get wasted and there was some drunken debauchery to enjoy, but overall I found it boring and awkward.
