Yes. If you'd just clenched your fists at your side, I'd say that isn't clearly a threat. Raising your hand in a fist, however, is pretty clearly a threatening gesture.

I can't imagine getting into a yelling argument with a coworker in front of my supervisor, much less raising a fist! The fact that is was over something trivial and not life- or career-changing is even more bizarre.

You sound like a workplace liability. Do you still have a job today?

Shaking a fist in a woman's face?

Weak sauce.

Doing so as a government employee, to another government employee, in the agency?

Get a defense lawyer.

Wait a minute. Wait a minute!

Yes, I did make a fist out of anger! Who said anything about striking anyone? I brought my hand up in gesture while talking; she said something in a disrespectful manner. I responded by clenching a fist, but I did not gesture it in her face! I kept it close to my body. Now I just got called in to the boss' office.

-Yelling over each other
-In front of a supervisor
-Clenching a fist (regardless of raising a hand or not)
-At a woman, no less, coming from a man

I agree, are you still employed? I have a slight temper myself, but all of the above is completely unfathomable to me...

Yes it is threatening. Good luck. I would call your EAP immediately and ask for help with anger issues. That may save your job..

This sure made it sound like you raised a fist.

This is going to be a painful lesson in controlling your temper. Tantrums are for toddlers.

I say it is threatening...you have to be careful and strive to check your emotions at the door. Your employees and employers will use anything against you if they have motive to dislike you.

Sorry Rick. As a manager in an office setting I wouldn't even tolerate the raised voices, but if one of my direct reports did what you described I would be having a conversation with HR about "disciplinary action up to and including termination." The first sentence in your quoted post above says it all.

If you do manage to keep your job, I think you may want to seriously consider the advice about using your EAP, if you have one, to help prevent this from happening again.
