Whatever it is you do with the IRS, just know that you have probably signed up for a lifetime of being totally on the up-and-up with your own tax return from then on. I would not want to be on a microscope for the rest of my life. I know that say applying for being an enrolled agent subjects you to a back lookup on your past returns. If you're completely kosher, go for it. I imagine any job with the IRS is like applying for the CIA or FBI. If you think that private employers do quite a significant background check, I imagine the IRS can do more. Make sure you have no skeletons in the closet you don't want to disclose.
It depends on your background. I'm asuming you're an accountant so you will probably be looking at a revenue agent position. You will start out by doing information audits and answering questions and then move up to field audits. Also, you won't be stuck working for the IRS forever; CPA and law firms love former IRS employees because the know all the tricks with the tax code.
The plus is that you get paid decent with great hours and great benefits. The downside is that you will be able to clear out a room when you tell people your occupation.

Reason: avoiding an audit
Ive done service calls for a couple of people who work for the IRS and they arent all as 'up-and-up' as you might think they are. I know for a fact one has a wife who runs her own outcall massage business and everything is cash (he bragged about it). The other runs his own little nursery' has a greenhouse in his back yard and makes a killing off of selling trays of flowers and back yard vegetables.
The government corrupt? You don't say? Yeah im a little worried about working for the devil. I still wanna have friends. Thanx for the info guys. I just want a decent paying job while my wife is starting up her business. But from what i have found it's harder to find a decent paying Irs job with no experience. The ad i responded to said "no experience, paid training." In my job search i have found all these jobs require a college education which i don't have. Im just a high school graduate.I feel kinda stuck. I feel like i wasted $50 bucks on this government Irs package i bought.
Bill, I was just looking online for IRS jobs. I am graduating with an accounting degree in a couple of months. You can go into their website and click on "careers". It will take you to the USA jobs website where you can apply online and also post your resume online. Good Luck.

I am new in the forum and also interested to get an IRS job. Does any one know the process? I saw threads about CI positions and it is tough - you need to pass a test, audit, job backgraound check ( they send an agent to talk to your all previous employers), drug test, criminal etc. Does it apply to RA( revenue agent) or RO (officer)? Do they do full audit of your tax returns or just screening for obvious misrepresentation? Thank you.
