They took over Dayton's (the forerunner to what is now Target), and then removed all of the traditions that Dayton's had had for a hundred years. Then, they consolidated Macy's North back to New York and took away our headquarters. Then they wonder why they do so poorly.

Macy's bought (not "stole") many local and much-loved department stores all over the country...Rich's and Davison's in Atlanta, both founded in the 1800s.

One HUGE thing for Macy's is to open up store credit cards for people. Where I work we have to open at least 8 a month or we will be written up and after so long there will be disciplinary actions. We are told by Macy's, to ask the same customer 3 times if they want to apply for a card, before giving it up. Stores like Macy's have incentive's for associates when they open up a card for a customer . Between 1-5 dollar per activated card in cash or store coupons. Sounds great but to me it is not worth it. I know first hand what those revolving department store credit card do to your fico-score so why would I try to convince others it such a great deal. We have to say something like this.....
"mam, you can save 15 % today if you open a Macy's card, it will only take a couple of minutes"
We want to say this..
"mam, would you like to open a 23% interest credit card so you can save $10. on this purchase and a lifetime of debt.."

I am working hard on leaving Macy's for many reasons. If you work at Macy's you don't get sick leave. You can have a sick child or be sick yourself but the company couldn't care less. It is what they call an unexcused absent and after so many, maybe 5-10 days in a year you will be fired.

I am very tired of being treated like I am worth nothing at my job. If you are not happy at work how can you treat your customer with Macy's "outstanding service" attitude. At Macy's we have to ask our customer if they received outstanding service after every transaction. We have to ask them to go on our website and leave a comment about the outstanding service they received that day.
I can't do it anymore. I use to love what I do but not anymore.
I will find another job and never shop Macy's again.
You might want to be glad you have a job at all right now...and I know it may not be the best situation to work for a company that demands a certain level of customer service from its employees, but it sure does reflect well on that company with its customers.

Yes, and then destroyed them...two of the best department stores that I have ever known.

I never knew Davison's...but I loved Rich's. WAY better than Macy's. The only good thing about Macy's back during the Rich's era was that it had to compete with Rich's.

I miss Foley's in Denver. The sold out to Macy's and they took over their spot at one mall but just left another mall totally vacant.

Fourth-quarter earnings for Macy's fell by nearly 59 percent
Nordstrom Inc. reported a 68 percent drop
Target's earnings dropped by 41 percent

Be careful about changing jobs now by going from one retailer to another.

Macy's is just dumb. Changing the name of so many stores made them lose a lot of business and now with the recession they are even further gone.

Yes, it's not like earnings for almost every major retailer is declining.

It's what companies do...they've been doing it for years. They buy another company and absorb that company - and the absorbed company name disappears. Macy's didn't start some new trend...
