Despite being thought of as an Eastern European city, Prague is actually located further west than Vienna.

Estonia and Finland both share land borders with Russia, but their respective capital cities are closer to each other than they are to Moscow or St. Petersburg.

Recife, Brazil is closer to Dakar, Senegal than it is to western Brazil.

Petropavlovsk Kamchatskiy, Russia is closer to Sapporo,Japan than it is to Vladivostok,Russia.

Part of Alaska is west of Wellington,New Zealand.

If you drive due south of Detroit,MI, you will be in Canada, the only major city in the USA where this is possible.

Miami,FL is closer to the Panama Canal than it is to Boston,MA, despite sharing the same coastline and the same highway.

Miami,FL is closer to two national capitals(Havana,Cuba;Nassau,The Bahamas) than it is to Florida's state capital, Tallahassee.

In the wintertime, Halifax,Nova Scotia,Canada share times zones with Santiago,Chile, despite Halifax being on the Atlantic Ocean and Santiago being close to the Pacific.
