What is amazing about that picture, is that it could be 25F (-4C) or 100F (38C) and you can't tell the difference. (I am guessing on the warmer end in this case if only because the woman is barefoot.

Fairbanks, Alaska to Prudhoe Bay, Alaska on Dalton Highway is probably one of the longest stretches of highway without any services- 240 miles or 386 km without any services between Coldfoot and Deadhorse. If you know of any others, let me know

On the Eyre Highway between Perth and Adelaide there are stretches of over 300 km between service stations.

The picture reminiscents my experience of nightmare in western Texas... almost close to empty gas in the car, no gas stations around

This a good one in regional Australia liking the towns of Cloncurry with Normanton. it's not a "highway" as such, but is the only road linking the two towns.

The United States is probably the country where you will find the widest span of temperatures.

Highest temperature ever recorded was 134 F(57 C) in Death Valley, California in 1913.

Coldest temperature was -80 F(-62 C) in Prospect Creek, Alaska in 1971.

Similar to the previous post,

The state of Utah also experiences highly variable temperature extremes in an area only about the size of the island of Great Britain.

Lowest: -56C (-69F) at Peter's Sink on February 1, 1985.
Highest: +47C (+117F) at St. George on July 5, 1985.

The only other state to experience a 100C+ degree difference in extremes is Montana. Can any British imagine if Sutherland and Kent managed to have temperatures that different from each other?

It occasionally happens that hottest and coldest temperatures in the contiguous US on a given date are both registered in California -- sometimes only about 250 miles apart (which is the distance from Bodie to Death Valley).

See, for example:

National Overview - August 2013 | August Daily Temperature Extremes | State of the Climate | National Climatic Data Center (NCDC)

Plus California. Besides the aforementioned +57°C in Death Valley, a temperature of –43°C was once recorded in the now-ghost town of Boca.
