I grew up in a community that is about 10% low income, 70% middle income, 20% upper income.
the low income people are chill, you usually ask "should i take my shoes off?" and they are like nah.
middle income most would ask you to remove your shoes, house parties you usually walk in and there is just a sea of shoes by the front door.
upper income it is expected to take off your shoes.
Summerwhale, aka Owen, aka Mac15 went on a rant a while back on this topic. He was offended he was asked to take his shoes off in Canada. He likes to take his tiny experiences in Winnipeg, of all places, and say the whole of Canada does it exactly the same. So you can generally take his answers and chuck them in the trash.
As a Canadian, I can say it simply depends on who's house you're in. Simple as that.
Now, now, Magnatomicflux - "in Winnipeg, of all places????"
I can't think of anywhere here where you wouldn't be expected to take your shoes off, including my place, but I wouldn't ask anyone to take off their shoes. It is enough the custom that it stands out if you don't and one would generally be considered rude if one didn't. I have told elderly people to keep their shoes on when they obviously had or would have difficulty removing them, and they still wanted to contort themselves this way and that way in order to be polite and remove their shoes. It took a lot of persuading to get them to keep their shoes on.
Of course there is one guy who will be told to take off his boots if he ever shows up here again because I felt he did it to be rude and disrespectful, and not because he didn't know any better...
I am not wearing them now. But sometimes I do ware them usually in the day. I would not even consider going into a house without shoes that is rude
So do you keep your shoes by the front door or are they usually sitting by your bed or in your living room?
I remember watching Happy Gilmore and i remember one scene when he got out of bed and he had his shoes right beside his bed and he put them on right when he got out of bed.

For me it isn't necessarely rude, but it would be very weird, entering a friends house and me and him removing our shoes and walking around in socks, it almost feels to intimate
The image gets funnier if I think about a large group of friends, all taking their shoes off, like some sort of mandatory uniform procedure, plus what about the smell? Someone is bound to have smelly feet.
Also, I don't know if this sounds naive or condescending, but we have rugs at our doorsteps here, so people can clean their shoes before entering home.
I find it very rude and weird. I would actually leave if I was told to take my shoes off.
