Not everybody enjoys diversity. In fact, I would suggest that the majority of people in the majority of places in the majority of history actually prefer to surround themselves with people who look/think/believe/behave like themselves.
If the Japanese prefer to surround themselves with other Japanese, and no one else, that doesn't make them bizarre; it puts them in the historic mainstream.
Yes...and in Japan's case they were even more isolated than normal, even from their neighbours Korea and China.
Shouldn't it be one of the countries where there is ongoing persecution, war or conflict between racial groups (whether it be in Africa, Asia, the Middle East or whatever), not one of the industrialized nations?
It's not so smart. They have zero population growth. Which is negatively impacting the economy, both in terms of no growing markets, no demand for new construction. But also in terms of the ageing population being a drain on the countries taxes.
No, Japan is shooting themselves in the foot by not allowing immigration.

By the Japanese government's own estimates, the population in Japan in a half century will have plunged by a third to around 87 million. In itself, that's not an awful thing (Unless you own real estate). However, nearly half of that 87 million will be over the age of 65. That means huge chunks of the national GDP will be devoted to caring for a segment of the population that are net economic consumers of healthcare, pensions, you name it. The working age population will be a fraction of what it is today.
In some ways, Japan's economy is the bellwether of China's. China is going through precisely the same real estate bubble that Japan went through in the late 80s and early 90s. And China's demographics are going to echo Japan's, with only a few years' difference.
Back to the subject at hand. So I think Japan is actually going to have to import workers to keep its economy functional.
With that said, I somehow think they'll be just fine, while Europe's cities are burning from all the benefits of their "diversity," and immigration policies.

Not the Romans. Their entire society was actually built on diversity.
