Let's say, through a quirky accident of fate, your spouse winds up in the witness protection program, and has to be moved to another country, forever, for his/her protection and national security. Which countries would you refuse to go to, giving up your family rather than endure. You would live there in safety, with enough resources to assure a life of dignity and healthy circumstances, and your spouse (for the purposes of this discussion, even if not in real life) someone you love and are devoted to. You're not living in a guarded villa, just becoming a member of the general society.
Are there any countries you'd refuse to accept relocating to, and just kiss your spouse goodbye?
For me, personally, the answer is no, there is no country I would not go to, even just for the heck of it.
I would rather convince my wife to come in Europe than go in Somalia or Chad or Niger or Central African Republic....
I wouldn't want to build my life even for love in - at least - half of the world.
Besides, love is too risky to abandon everything and move into less developed places. And I prefer my children to have a powerful passport and good education.

Just to clarify, you don't get to choose, you go there the State Department sends you. You keep your nationalithy, as expts, but live under false identity. General rules of witness protection apply, including certain guarantees of safety and protection.

In this scenario, there is no country I would not go.

I think it probably depends on age. When I'd just got my first degree, I seriously contemplate coming to the 'States for my second, but everyone here told me I was off my head unless I'd sold my soul for perpetual health. From then on it has tended to sound a mixture of fascination and horror, sometimes at the same time, and nowadays I don't think I could contemplate all the bang-bangs and such. Fortunately, my Wife has never been tempted at all: she'd prefer Scotland, which God forbid!
