The British are obsessed with class, and generally dont care about race.
To the British, being rich, or poor is a bigger deal than being considered White or black.
Americans on the other hand are obsessed with race. (Example is the creator of this topic), only a race obsessed person goes to other countries and think about these kind of things.
Ever consider that it might have been your behaviour/attitude that people might have been reacting to? Aussies generally won't hold back if they think you've crossed a line.
Nah, it's more because Australians tend to be more boorish than the other Anglophone countries. I spoke to quite a few people over there who think it is okay to say "negro". I won't even get into the things that get tossed around about Asians.
They DEFINITELY have the least manners, compared to the UK, Canada and even the US, and I've spent substantial time in them all.
While what you're saying is accurate, in the real world, people do not stop and think, "wait, this is a religion" when they stereotype Muslims. They have a certain phenotype in mind. While there are Black Muslims and White Muslims with blonde hair and blue eyes, put them next to a brown skinned Muslim, who do you think the anti Muslim crowd are going to target? Jewish is also a religion not a race but people speak of it as if it were a race. In real world situations, what's accurate is largely irrelevant. People will behave based on what they themselves believe.
"Racism" has a specific definition, but it's true that in our contemporary times its real-world definition has evolved to almost anything related to even the slightest observable difference between groups of people. This includes religion, language, culture, etc.
That said, there are also groups within groups that have adopted very elastic definitions of racism and also X-phobias (usually relating to their group) in order to try and place themselves above any criticism of their beliefs and practices.
For example, there is a trend among the more radical Islamists worldwide that instantly and loudly labels any criticism of that religion's tenets (including the more objectionable/questionable ones) as racism and islamophobia.
Racism based on religion has to be the stupidest thing ever invented by humans.
"My fairy tale is far superior to your fairy tale."
"Screw u, my fairy tale is the best of them all. Get out of here, you heathen!"
Racism based on skin color is also equally stupid
My lack of melanin makes me superior to you because you have more melanin to protect you from the sun. Nevermind science confirming since 1950 that race is not scientific but an invention that resulted of European coonzation of North and south America.
Or the genius idea of nationalism.
humanoids have existed for almost 200 thousand years and evolved into proper homosapiens around 60 thousand years ago.
During all those thousandths of years, all we did was migrate continuously and bang one another….
Then suddenly, 250 years ago come the concept of countries or nation states.
What is 250 years compared to almost 200,000 years of homoerectus evolution?
Most countries are creations of elites, or even corporations…. yet dumb humans die for them and feel tremendous pride as if countries were some major important sacred divine thing that has exsted for millions of years.
Before the invention of countries, most of the world was not divided as it looks today, and a considerable amount of people who share the same nationality today, didnt even belonge to the same political organizations 300 years ago.

I don't think Britain is that class ridden anymore compared to even a few decades ago.
Whilst increasingly the very wealthy often come from overseas, including wealthy Russian Oligarchs, Indians, Arabs and the Far East.
Although Britain's wealthiest man Jim Ratcliffe is actually British, he was the son of a joiner father and a mother who was an accounts office worker. Ratcliffe also lived there in a council house (the projects) until the age of ten. Today Ratcliffe is worth over £21 Billion ($27 Billion USD), and owns Ineos chemicals group, which he founded in 1998 and which h still owns two-thirds of, and which has been estimated to have a turnover of over $80 billion a year.

Well keep in mind, if we live in the US and have never lived elsewhere, how would we know that it's different without asking? The only way Americans can know that the obsession with race is an American thing is if non Americans tell us. Americans live on stereotypes because that's what most are exposed to and therefore the most easily accessible information.

It's noteworthy how in western countries today, in the context of applying accommodation and discrimination policies, regulations and laws, there is an extremely strong push to elevate religion to an innate, unchangeable part of a person's being in the same way that stuff like skin colour, gender and disabilities is.
I'd add that sexual orientation already has this status now. Actually, there is probably a greater consensus for that than there is for religion. But it wasn't that long ago that sexual orientation was viewed as a "choice" as opposed to something that's innate.
Today a lot of people would still disagree that religion is actually innate but there is tremendous pressure against and even condemnation of that view as xenophobic and intolerant.
