I have always been a stickler about spelling and will look up the proper spelling of words in the dictionary whenever necessary. Personally, I find poor spelling rather annoying. Just one of those pet peeves of mine. I think poor spelling is just laziness, not a character flaw and we all do something that bugs other people, that's what makes us human. As far as School goes, Here in NY, spelling is taught on a regular basis. My daughter learns words I have never even heard of. She is an excellent speller and is also writing a book. I have always encouraged her to look up any word she doesn't understand before using it. If we learn to spell & use proper grammer right from the first time, it justs makes for good habits later on.
Why is spelling so poor lately?
Is it just laziness or is there more to it than that?
Is it just me that this irritates?
It's because people don't read as much anymore, I think.
If you read with any frequency, you know how a word is spelled because you have seen it. Once you've seen it (sometimes it has has to be more than once) you just call it up on that little screen inside your forehead and read it off if you need to remember how to spell it. If you don't read, it never gets filed and you can't pull it up.
This may have already been posted/mentioned, and I apolgize if I am rehashing such, but since when did "loose" and "lose" become synonyms and not homonyms?
They aren't homonyms, either, lol.
Homonyms share the same spelling and pronounciation but not the same meaning.
"Loose" and "lose" are neither pronounced the same way nor spelled the same way.
I agree, however, that they are used interchangeably far too often.
Imagine if good spelling became a prerequisite for employment. I'll bet we'd see some improvements, and quickly!
