My uncle had a lot of very vivid expressions that I deeply love. "Hotter than a two-dollar pistol" is one.
Another always confused me; on rare occasions he would say "Going Truman Everts again?" or "Are you trying to be Truman Everts?"
May years later I learned Truman Everts was the first white guy to get lost in Yellowstone Park. For reasons of his own, he left an early party of tourists, even though the guide warned him sternly to stay.
He had been long given up for dead when he finally wandered back to civilization again, many months later.
My family all live less than 100 miles from Yellowstone, so my uncle must have picked up that obscure name on a visit there. My father always knew what he meant, so they may have been together when my uncle first heard the name. They were very close all their lives.
But it reminds me of a true story of skiers who got lost. It was one man and two women. One of the women was convinced the guy was headed in the wrong direction. He warned her sternly to stay with them, too. She went her own way and got out soon. The other two were found dead later.
