Catawampus

As opposed to Catacorner or Cattycorner or Kittycorner or Catercorner. All of these I’ve seen written or heard. Apoarently there is no one correct form.

Catawampus is simply crooked or crosswise, I think. I do love saying it.

Kaput - it implies a lot in two short syllables.

There are a couple of songs in which turns of a phrase are very evocative.

....all the leaves have gone green. Jean, Oliver

It’s coming on Christmas.... River, Joni Mitchell

It's "cattycorner" in my world.

I think of catawampus as being all messed up, while kittycorner and the like refer to a location. Not next door or directly in front or behind, but offset so
just the corner of one lot touches the other, or is the closest point across the street.
