Thought of this one today when thinking about my dog, who is in fact as smart as a whip.


Of course I did my research before posting and I learned that at times, a similar expression has been "as smart as a steel trap."


I think a steel trap would smart even worse than a whip... (just to be clear, this is defining smart as a level of pain, not intelligence)

I'm not sure, but I've always thought it was the speed of the whip that was smart, not the sting of it.
