She asked Mrs. Forrester for help with the pronunciation, and the teacher loudly intoned, "That's pronounced YOES-MIGHT, my dear!"

Boy, I say, Boy, didn't she ever hear of Yosemite Sam!!!

Before TV, comic books left a lot to the imagination. I thought it was yo-sa-might Sam, too. We also did not know that Potrzebie (Mad Magazine) was a real Polish word pronounced "POAT-cheb-yeh". Same goes for Superman's archenemy Mister Mxyzptlk, which actually has a pronunciation listed in some dictionaries

Then again...how about those left-handed Veeblefetzers that Mad magazine used to talk about?

Angelino socialites fine each other a dollar,
For saying "La Jolla",
But they reward each other with a Picasso or a Goya,
For saying "La Hoya",

"Potrzebie", "veeblefetzer", now there's a pair of furshlugginer words for you.

Continuing on the theme of words/names that were commonly mispronounced years ago, I just recalled another.
White Rock carbonated beverages had a trademarked image on their labels, depicting the mythical Greek Goddess Psyche. She was kneeling on a large rock, and underneath her image was her name, Psyche.

However, back in the good old days, it seems that a large percentage of the population thought that her name was pronounced, "Pishy" .

If there was ever a word that a company wouldn't want associated with their beverage, I think it would have to be, "Pishy".
