No, once upon a time, a lifetime ago, I was in South Texas - around McAllen, Pharr, Weslaco - on a training visit. I had run out of reading material, we stopped at a 7-11. It was good size, but there was absolutely no newspaper, no magazines, no paperbacks.
I concluded that there was no market for lit of any kind. I couldn't wait to get out of there. This was mid-'80s, so we can hope things have improved there. But as I recall, it was all AM radio, talk radio - & hardly any news at all.

I think it is related to the teaching theory from some time back that spelling should not count --- as long as a child was trying to capture words on paper, everything was fine, resulting in a generation with poor spelling skills, some of whom became teachers who could not spell. That meant they could not even recognize words their students misspelled. I have seen some of those teachers submit forms to my office with simple words spelled incorrectly. There is more than one post here on CD from parents commenting on communications from teachers containing spelling and grammar errors, such as flyers and emails.
In addition to the obvious literacy problems, the person managing that particular Subway shop is not very skilled at knowing when to order supplies.
Based on the extensive list of ingredients that are not available, you have to wonder which sandwiches they were able to prepare for customers. It surely was a very short list of availability, and it would probably have been less confusing for customers if the signs said something like, "Only the following sandwiches are currently available".
