I think it is related to the teaching theory from some time back that spelling should not count --- as long as a child was trying to capture words on paper, everything was fine, resulting in a generation with poor spelling skills, some of whom became teachers who could not spell. That meant they could not even recognize words their students misspelled. I have seen some of those teachers submit forms to my office with simple words spelled incorrectly. There is more than one post here on CD from parents commenting on communications from teachers containing spelling and grammar errors, such as flyers and emails.
Back when dinosaurs ruled, I scored a 100% on my History test, minus 3%, due to spelling errors.
Things change.
In big RED letters my teacher wrote: Spelling matters.

I have no kids so I don't follow education news. But I think I remember reading that spelling is no longer a subject. Is that possible?
When I challenge people on their spelling or grammar they often respond with "you knew what I meant" as if the absolute minimum necessary to (sort of) get their point across is enough.

No doubt. How does a store run out of nearly all of their ingredients at the same time?

Maybe a bus full of sumo wrestlers stopped to eat on their way home from a match?
One of the latest phraes that is realling boiling my blood is, "just sayin."
You still have time to proofread and edit your post. Unless, of course, you were quoting someone else, which isn't clear.
