I love this thread! Unfortunately, directing young people to read more may not have the desired effect, as books abound with all kinds of typo and printing errors these days! There are characters who "pour" over papers instead of "pore", etc. Unfortunately, these errors leap off the page at me, completely distracting me from the story!
I've seen "wolla" or "walla" in other threads on City-Data, and I cringed. My soul weeps for the future of this country! We must look like a nation of complete idiots.
The continuous dumbing down of America! Why are we coddling school kids... feeling sorry for them... giving them a pass... and not challenging them? Let's bring intelligence back into our educational system!
It's a misspelling of "voilà", based on a common mispronunciation of that word. I think the mispronunciation was originally intentional, intended for humorous effect, but I can't cite a source for that. In any case, the mispronounced/misspelled version is now in common use by people who don't know the original word.
In another city-data forum, I just saw a post that used "defiantly" when the context made it clear that the poster meant "definitely".
I guess, for all intensive purposes, they're, like, the same, ain't they?
sigh....
I saw one today wherein the person said they were not averse to doing something, and then someone responded to correct them that "averse" is not a word--they should have said "adverse".

I noticed that same post, Rob. Stuff like that drives me nuts!
I participate in the word game threads and am amazed at how few people know how to spell and how to construct a sentence. I wonder why the heck they are playing word games, if they don't know basic English spelling and grammar.
Here's another story. Several years ago, while at work, I was reviewing some medical records. I looked at a patient's intake questionnaire and in the space where she was to indicate her religious affiliation, she wrote, "7th Day of Venice." I laughed so hard, the person in the office next to mine came over to see what was happening!
