In the Australian Bush, many stockmen attach corks with strings to the brim of their hats which tangle in their face keeping flies away. That's where the expression 'no flies on him' came from. There are so many flies in Australia, sometimes they are referred to as the national bird.
In today's Dear Heloise column, a woman complains about a recent purchase. She states that she wanted towels that are "all cotton", but that she was dismayed to see that the label on her most recently-purchased towels reveals them to be "100% cotton and 100% algodon".
In her response, Heloise explains that "algodon" is simply the Spanish word for cotton, and--diplomatically--she doesn't mention the woman's mathematical impairment.
