You can add "basically" to the list of pet peeves as far as I am concerned.
It seems that many people can't respond to a question without inserting both the word "well" and the word "basically" before the substantive part of their response.
In other words...Well, basically, I...
I find that most people use that...redundant...addition when referring to a time in the wee hours of the morning, such as, "It happened at 2:00 AM in the morning".
On a few occasions, I have responded by saying, "As opposed to 2:00 AM in the evening?"
Needless to say, I have been met with mostly blank stares at that point.
Sometimes I add words for cadence. So well, basically I kinda like to ya know, write my words thinking of how they sound when someone speaks them. That way some1 can start they're brain burning up b4 they even reed what im actually saying, right?
As one who has prefaced remarks needlessly with so, OK, or well, you've made me question myself as to why I do so.
The answer is that any one of them translates, in my mind, as, "With that in mind", therefore tying my response to something someone else has said.
My favorite car bugaboo is from the movie Grease. In the greased lightning song they mention having four barrel quads AND fuel injection as well as being a four speed and hydra-matic.

Cut off one arm and two more shall take its place!
(I guess I'm an old duffer)
