Description: This is a favorite spot for locals for two reasons: Desert Survivors has a great selection of desert “greenery,” and it’s a vocational rehab and early intervention program, so your purchase helps these people maintain active and productive lives. Although you won’t find cacti here, you will find nearly everything else that grows in these parts, including trees, yucca plants, agave, and succulents. The nursery is open year-round, Tues through Sun, and has very popular semiannual sales in April and October.

Description: This desert nursery on the far east side has 6 large greenhouses with thousands of plants and hundreds of varieties of cacti and succulents. The selection includes euphorbia from Africa, mammillaria from Mexico, and organ pipes from Arizona. You can buy a ready-to-go dish garden of cacti or have one custom designed. Employees carefully pack the cacti for air or road travel or mail them (fully guaranteed) if you prefer. If you don’t have a green thumb but still want a cactus memento, the greenhouses also have sweet treats made from cacti, such as candies and jellies. Closed Sun.

Description: Built in 1932, this Joesler-designed Mission-style complex was one of Arizona’s first shopping centers. You can still see parts of the original whitewashed adobe brick and inlaid tile structure that today surrounds a brick courtyard with trees all around. The plaza is home several shops including Zocalo offering handmade Mexican furnishings, Avenue Boutique with clothing and jewelry, and Bon, featuring home and garden accessories.
