Description: Roam the halls of James Deering’s mansion, where the Miami pioneer resided from 1916 until his death in 1925. With 180 acres of gardens and the mansion on-site, it’s easy to spend a day roaming around the property. Weddings and festivals are frequently held here and the surroundings will transport you to a different time period. The last Sunday during the months of July, Apr and Sept are free. 4. The Barnacle Historic State Park

Description: The Barnacle was built in 1891 and served as the home of Coconut Grove pioneer Ralph Middleton Munroe. Munroe developed the 40 acres of land after he purchased it in 1886; the site remains the oldest residence in Miami-Dade County and earned a place on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. Visitors can walk through the house itself and the grounds, which are situation on the water. Tours are given Fri through Mon at 10 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 1 p.m., and 2 p.m. Advance reservations are required for tours on Wed and Thurs. The tour is approximately 1 hour and requires participants to withstand outdoor weather and climb to the second floor of the house. Tickets can be purchased at the park office.

View period-furnished ornate rooms indoors and botanic exhibits (including orchids) outdoors.
