8. Big Cypress Shootout
City: Palm Beach, FL
Category: Annual Events & Festivals
Description: The Big Cypress Shootout is a reenactment of a battle between the Seminoles and the U.S. Army in the Second Seminole War (1835–42). The occasion honors the Seminoles’ struggles to remain in their homeland, and the sacrifices they made in that effort. The weapons and the uniforms from both sides are authentic, as are the tactics used. Along with the “hostilities,” there’ll be music, Seminole food, Seminole and pioneer artisans, tomahawk throws, authentic Seminole and soldier camps, and more-modern pursuits such as venomous snake shows and alligator-wrestling. One other thing is authentic, as well—you’re on an Indian reservation and surrounded by the magnificent isolation of the Everglades, the endless “River of Grass” that flows out into the horizon. Held in late Feb.
