Description: A classic, no-frills Greek diner set amid the trendy shops and nightclubs of the East Village. The handful of tables in the slightly dusty, blue and white storefront fill up regularly with locals, and it’s easy to see why: Gyros come piled high with meat on freshly baked pita bread, and the Greek salad has just the right mix of olive oil, vinegar, and feta cheese atop the lettuce and vegetables. The burgers and fries are good, too, although the portions are on the small side. For dessert, another Greek standard bearer: sweet, crispy baklava. Parking can be a bit of a problem, but you shouldn’t have to look for too long to find a spot on the street. Closed Sunday.

Description: Think “McSushi” at this popular lunch-only spot accessible from the downtown skywalk—not due to bland, uniform food, but rather convenience: Combo sushi plates are dished out by a young, enthusiastic staff (this place shares a chef with favorite Des Moines sushi spot Miyabi 9). The standard combo has a choice of sushi rolls including California roll, Alaska roll, and Hawaiian roll, with crab stick, cream cheese, and mango. The sashimi combo has a nice presentation of tuna, salmon, and yellowtail. Combo plates come with miso soup and a choice of salad: squid, ginger, or seaweed. It’s hardly a gourmet treat, but it’s tasty, quick, and cheap, and a nice alternative to a typical fast lunch.
