Description: A sprawling white inn right on the water, this full-service hotel dominates the quiet side. There are 60 rooms inside the blocky place, each with air-conditioning, color TV, and private bath. Most also have a balcony or patio that hangs right out over the water. The interior decorator should be run out of town, but you can’t beat the views from the private decks, some of which take in the harbor, some the whole waterfront. There are several levels of rooms—most are motel standard—and packages from which to choose. Windows on the Harbor Restaurant provides just that and serves up traditional New England fare with a small submenu of Caribbean cuisine, a nice treat.

Description: Boothbay Harbor seems to have a corner on the B&B market. Every block there’s another one. This 1869 colonial has been a guest house since the 1920s, making it one of the oldest inns in the harbor, if not the oldest. The water is right off the backyard, and the wraparound porch—just what you want—takes it all in. The rooms are decorated a la Laura Ashley, whose floral designs are either to your taste or not, and all of them have private baths. They also have their own discrete entrances from the porch, which is welcome if you value quiet and privacy. Some are one-room affairs, others suites. Try the Blueberry Bay Suite, which has wood paneling and wraparound windows that frame the bay. The harborfront hot tub is a hoot. New in 2007 were seven larger suites, each with a waterview.
