Description: If you’re in the mood for some genuine Carolina barbecue, just follow your nose to this acclaimed roadside joint. The hickory fires start early so the pork, chicken, beef, ribs, and turkey can cook slowly over an open pit. The late Larry “Bubba” Schauer and his wife, Julie, brought their secret recipe from West Virginia to Hatteras Island more than 20 years ago—and the food has been drawing locals and tourists to their eatery ever since. Homemade coleslaw, baked beans, french fries, and corn bread round out the meal. Bubba’s has a children’s menu and a nice selection of beer and soft drinks. Bubba’s Sauce is a hot commodity with barbecue fans and is sold at retail and specialty shops across the Outer Banks. Bubba’s is open daily for lunch and dinner from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. during the summer; call for winter hours. You’ll find a second Bubba’s, Bubba’s Too, farther north on NC 12 in Avon, next to the Food Lion.
