Description: This Ocracoke stop fascinates the younger crowd. The pirate shop features a historical exhibit about Edward Teach (aka Blackbeard) that includes a short video, weapons, old bottles, Blackbeard in full battle dress, and dioramas for the kids. There is a small fee to view the exhibit, but children younger than age 6 get in free. The gift shop, a must for all ages, is filled with everything imaginable related to pirates and piracy. Teach’s Hole is open Easter through Thanksgiving.

Description: The artwork in this well-known gallery includes North Carolina pottery, handmade wooden boxes, jewelry, and other original items. The focus is on excellent craftsmanship and variety. Owner Philip Howard also sells his pen-and-ink and watercolor prints here.

Description: Owner-artist Kathleen O’Neal has lived on Ocracoke for more than 25 years. “Art jewelry” aptly describes most of the finds here. O’Neal does all the copper enameling and silver- and goldsmithing work herself. The gallery also features local and North Carolina artwork such as large, contemporary-style watercolors of island scenes by Debbie Wells and the fused glass work of Libby Hicks. Local photography, sculptural assemblages created by O’Neal, glass art, hand-carved wooden boxes, and mixed-media art are just some of the exciting discoveries at Island Artworks. It’s a real fine-art experience. This colorful shop is open from mid-March until Christmas.
