Description: The 120-acre campus of this school, with its barnyard animals, hiking trails, and outdoor classrooms, is an inviting introduction to the array of learning opportunities the school offers its students. The challenging, personalized curriculum is presented as an integrated process, blending many subjects and activities.The school currently serves 500-plus students from infancy through high school.It was founded in 1984 and prides itself on enriching students through innovation, small class sizes, and positive, collaborative relationships. The school has grown over the years, with its first graduating class in 2007. All its graduates have gone on to further education.The preschool philosophy is inspired by the Reggio Emilia approach—a student-centered, experiential, inquiry-based learning model. The school is known nationally as a benchmark for early-childhood education programs. This approach also filters into the primary school, which uses Reggio concepts in conjunction with Literacy First and everyday mathematics curricula.German and Spanish are offered in middle school and high school, and in addition to required courses, students can participate in the arts, speech and debate, athletics, and a number of other activities. The school’s rock band is a favorite choice. Sports offered include basketball, cheer, cross-country, football, golf, softball, tennis, baseball, and girls’ volleyball.Riverfield is a close community of students, faculty, and parents.
