Description: Portland Center Stage, our city’s only fully professional resident theater company, presents its dramas and comedies in the Gerding Theatre, a beautiful LEED-certified (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) building in the Pearl District. Recent productions have included West Side Story, the Fantasticks, Grey Gardens, Sunset Boulevard, and a wonderful adaptation of Ken Kesey’s novel Sometimes a Great Notion. PCS also shows compelling Christmas shows such as The Santaland Diaries and A Christmas Carol. Tickets prices depend on seating and day of the week. In addition, PCS sponsors an intensive playwrights’ festival each summer.

Description: Unlike many college art museums and galleries that, for better or worse, only reflect work undertaken by faculty and students, The Art Gym at Marylhurst is a consistently exciting venue for contemporary artists in and out of school, often out on the cutting edge. Once the gymnasium for this private school, the 3,000-square-foot gallery is large enough to hold sizable sculptures and large installations. The Art Gym is open Tues through Sun noon to 4 p.m.

Description: This center is devoted to the photographic image, providing resources for students, artists, teachers, and professionals. It has a wonderful gallery space that shows the work of new and established photographers, but it also offers classes, darkroom space (for those who have not converted solely to digital), and help with access to lighting. They also help out artists by reviewing portfolios and teaching workshops on how to market your wares.

Description: A popular stopping spot in downtown Portland since it opened in 1972, Quintana has a bounty of American Indian and Hispanic art. Walking by its windows is a show in itself with a sumptuous display of Northwest tribal masks and totems as well as pueblo pottery, fetishes, and other crafts from the Southwest. The gallery also has a good collection of photographs by Edward Curtis as well as collector-quality antiques.

Description: The Oregon Writer’s Colony was formed to support writers, establish a permanent writers’ retreat on the Oregon Coast called the Colony House, and sponsor a variety of writing workshops throughout the year. The Colony House is a log house located in Rockaway Beach with great views of the Pacific Ocean and Lake Lytle. The house has four bedrooms, two full bathrooms, a well-equipped kitchen, and many windows with views. Members of the Oregon Writer’s Colony can reserve a room with a shared bathroom and kitchen year-round.
