Description: A talking outhouse with a sense of humor? That’s just the beginning of your self-guided trek through the Old West at its most rustic. More than 50 wooden shacks house artifacts from days gone by, and there are plenty of witticisms sprinkled in with the history lesson—for instance, the proprietress of the seamstress shop is Mrs. Hattie Coates. But only the worthy may enter through the front door. A sign outside admonishes, Tinhorns, Gamblers and Layabouts, Use the Back Door. There is even a rebuilt stockade. Stagecoaches used to stop here to water their horses at Four Mile Spring, and the town of Moss City was located here more than a century ago. The owners offer lots of hands-on activities for the kids. The present-day tourist complex 4 miles west of Custer has regular tours 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mon through Sat and 9:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sun, May through Sept, and by appointment or chance during the winter.
