Their friendly and helpful staff is well trained and will assist you in finding the most suitable equipment for skiing, snowboarding, skateboarding, and rock climbing. During the winter months, they also provide the newest in ski and snowboard rentals at their Lead location, right on the way to Terry Peak and Deer Mountain ski areas. The Rapid City shop is open seven days a week all year long, and the Lead shop is open primarily from Nov to Mar. The Spearfish location is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mon through Sat.

Description: This shop specializes in downhill skis, snowboards, and everything you need to be attired for playing in the snow. Description: This dance theater is managed by an all-volunteer board, a sure sign of community commitment. It sponsors two professional dance performances each year, one in the spring and another in the fall, with master classes and school activities coinciding. In recent years, the Kothi modern dance group has performed, as has Kim Robards’s modern dance company from Denver, the Joffrey Ballet from New York, and Spectrum, a jazz company from Seattle. The theater performs the Nutcracker ballet biennially, bringing in a professional performer to complement local talent, and also offers weeklong summer dance workshops for both children and adults. Ticket prices vary for each performance but range between $7 and $20.

Description: The Friends of the Devereaux Library, at South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, sponsor this annual film series, a fund-raiser for the library. Ten classic films are presented, one each Sunday evening from mid-Jan through mid-Mar. Previous showings have included Rear Window, Meet Me in St. Louis, and North by Northwest. The cozy, historic theater has a great old-fashioned balcony and a huge screen. You can purchase season tickets for about $30.

Comfortably seated, you can see first-run movies, with matinees (before 6 p.m.) costing $6.50 for both children and adults. Description: The Perfect Hanging is a display space for prints by South Dakotan and internationally known artists. The gallery has Jon Crane watercolors and paintings by Terry Redlin and Gene Stocks. It also carries artist giftware, including music boxes, pins, sculptures, and mugs. If the Perfect Hanging doesn’t have what you want in stock, the staff can order any print available and dress it up with custom matting and framing. They specialize in conservation and museum-quality mounting and framing.

Description: Prairie Edge is a local landmark. It’s a great place to shop (more about that in the Shopping chapter), and the restored building’s stunning architecture alone is worth a visit. The second-floor fine art gallery is a gem in the Prairie Edge crown. Here, basking in the light from the huge old windows, you may see the amazing photographs of Robert Wong of Rapid City and the contemporary Native American work of Don Montileaux, or the work of local artists Paul Goble, Loy Allen, Jim Whartman, and James Van Nuys. Changing exhibits feature the art of many artists, but the astounding cast-paper art of Allen and Patty Eckman is on permanent exhibit, so be sure to have a look.

Description: The oldest frame shop in Rapid City, Rimrock Art & Frame is also an artists’ gallery that displays original work and prints of regional artists, including the oils of Jan Wiedmeier, the original lithographs of Russell Chatham, and the fantasy art of John Backlund. Jon Crane’s prints (both current and secondary-market editions) are here, as is the work of Kay Williams and Ron Holyfield, longtime summer artists-in-residence at Custer State Park. The owners, Mike and Debbie McLane, are fine artists themselves: Mike, a certified professional framer, produces great watercolors, and Debbie is a talented photographer.

Description: This small gallery is devoted to Native American art. It is inside the Journey Museum, near the gift shop, and your Journey ticket will admit you at no additional charge. The gallery has shown delightful and colorful contemporary Sioux quilts from the Journey’s permanent collection; the paintings and three-dimensional art of Jim Yellowhawk of Rapid City; the beading, pottery, and batik of Linda Szabo of Mission; the acrylics and oils of Del Iron Cloud, also of Rapid City; and the sculptures of Tom Red Bear of Hot Springs.
