Description: In the restaurant business longevity pretty much says it all. Rocky Mount has been cooking North Carolina–style barbecue for more than 40 years. The shredded or sliced pork here has a vinegar tang, a perfect contrast to the warm, sweet hush puppies which accompany your meal. Platters and sandwiches are served with a wide variety of sides—coleslaw, baked beans (made with ground beef), lima beans, collards, sweet potato casserole, onion rings, and more. (They offer the side dishes as a meal itself—the four-veggie platter.) Kids eat free on Tues. (One child per paying adult, please.) Save room for the delicious banana pudding. Takeout and catering are available. The restaurant also stocks many of the products its kitchen uses—Atkinson’s corn bread and hush puppy mix, their own special vinegar sauce, and Hub’s Peanuts. Open Mon through Sat 11 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Closed Sun.
