Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

Scattershooting / Waiting For Possible Job Prospect

It's time for some more this and that in this venture which I call Scattershooting. You bring the marshmallows, and I can add a few logs for the computer campfire. Just don't roast them too dark....

A big step in my life occurred, oddly enough, when I was busy at work this last work. I've been on the lookout for a few months on potential openings in other departments within the company in which I work. Guess what? A few days ago, something promising did. When things on my floor quietened down for a little bit, it was an opportunity which needed to present itself. Electronically, I had sent my resume to a different department in my building with the help of a co-worker. I have the opportunity to start a new career in Customs Brokerage at my office after spending sixteen years as a courier dispatcher. Now, I don't want to jinx it, but I am in a waiting pattern. In the coming days, I will be contacted to see whether I will be going in for an interview with some staff members, and if so, when I'll do that.

And if I win that gig? Well, then, that ends the longest tenure of any job I've ever had, but it opens up the door for me to go to a better department than the one I'm planning to depart, not to mention having a better job. Previously, I've also made plans for a vacation to Corpus Christi within a few months, but that was before this situation came up. If I get the job, then said plans will be cancelled for that time. After I've worked a sufficient amount of time in the new department, then I can make a new set of plans. Otherwise, if I don't get the job, then I'll remain where I'm at and Corpus Christi will be in the offing.

I'll let you know in the comment section the progress of this proposed move. With the move, it also means that my schedule will change to different days, but will still work early morning until mid-afternoon. Sometimes, being in a big building with multiple departments has its advantages.

This year's Republican National Convention, in my view, was the best ever and the best I've ever seen. Absolutely great speeches from most of the speakers, including the man accepting the nomination for President, Donald J Trump. One writer I've read in the last day or two said that this was a "white" convention. Huh? I don't know what convention he was watching, but I thought we had a good group of speakers, some from different backgrounds and different walks of life. It wasn't just whites. We had black speakers. We had Muslim speakers. We had Hispanic speakers. We had an Asian speaker. We even got to hear from members of the Trump family. And there were no major riots or police incidents in Cleveland for the week, proving once again that peace rules over trouble.

Now, the attention shifts over to Philadelphia, where the Democratic National Convention will take place this next week. If I have the stomach for it, then I might watch a few minutes of it here and there, but let's face it, it won't be worth watching. We already know what their subject matter is going to be about. Clearly, the election comes down to these options: One is either for America or against America.

In November, voters get to decide their choice.

So Rihanna is being tabbed for the part of Marion Crane in A&E's drama, Bates Motel. Please, folks, no more remakes of the old Psycho. Okay??

It's only a week away from marching band taking full swing as rehearsals begin at high schools in my home state of Texas and across the country. Two schools in Frisco, Texas, will be interesting to watch. One is Wakeland High School in the first post-Gerry Miller year, and the other is the all-new Lebanon Trail High School, which will enroll only freshmen this school year, but who will also employ marching mode for their band students. The latter will be attending two regional band competitions but will not attend UIL for its first year.

By the way, it should be noted that all but two high schools in Frisco will have at least one new band staff member. Replacements are going in at Wakeland, Independence, Frisco High, Centennial, and Heritage, while Lone Star is adding a second assistant. Reedy's band staff will remain intact, as will the one at Liberty, who is only getting a new percussion instructor.

Earlier, I mentioned Corpus Christi. Officials there are finally going to get started on the new Harbor Bridge over the Port of Corpus Christi, long anticipated by locals to replace the current Harbor Bridge, which is already a sight in and of itself. The existing bridge, opened in 1959, is aging and is too small for the big ships to make their clearance. Ground will be broken in August for the new bridge, which is expected to be some 60 feet higher and will be more driver-friendly and pedestrian-friendly.

The Houston Astros are gaining on the Texas Rangers. Something tells me that the Rangers are on the verge of a collapse in the American League West, but there's still a chance they might trade for someone to help them in the home stretch. Will the Astros add someone from another team? Probably not likely, as they've got folks in the minors who are almost ready to step up. Preston Tucker is back in an Astros uniform while rookie A.J. Reed has been demoted back to Triple-A.

This transgender nonsense that our federal government is forcing down our throats is getting way out of hand. I am boycotting all of our national parks that Barack Obama has hijacked without Congress, removing gender titles from restrooms. I'm boycotting them until this stupid rule gets changed back. You know, here's a way you solve this problem so everybody's happy: Have a family restroom as an option. I see this in a number of malls and some schools. Those that can't decide if they are a man or a woman can just go hide in a family restroom and lock the door. When they're finished, they can come out.

Our government needs to quit playing God. God created boys and girls. Man and woman. This should not be up for debate. Washington needs to leave us alone and stay out of our pants!

All the more reason for us to vote for Trump. The left continue to lose their collective minds.

Of all the things of my life to go through, I have never had to serve jury duty. Ever. Oh, but one time, many moons ago, I came close. A Dallas County court had sent a summons out in the mail to me. Just one problem, however. At that time, I resided in Tarrant County, making me ineligible to go in and serve.

Since I now live in Denton County, there's not much that's really happening. I think that, for the moment, I'm safe from a jury summons. Besides, there's no money in those things.

In a heartwarming story, how about a little bundle of joy hearing a sweet voice from her mother? Here's the catch, however: She's already 3 months old and this is new ground.

Did you catch what July 20 was? It was the anniversary of the first moon landing by fellow American Neil Armstrong 47 years ago. They touched on that at the Republican National Convention on that night. Nice touch.

It's only a matter of time before anyone in Lewisville, Texas, hears about any more businesses on the east side of Interstate 35E to be shuttered due to road construction. TXDOT is well underway with the constructing of the northwestern portion of the stack with the interchange at Texas Highway 121. The Olive Garden restaurant, which still sits in what will be the eventual path of a new feeder road to accommodate expanded freeway mainlanes, has no new news on closing and subsequent demolition. No word yet, either, on whether or not they have a new location in mind. That OG location has been very popular to many locals, one of them being this writer, for a number of years and is still well-attended.

No way. No way in heck or high water......that I am going to switch to Windows 10. Heard too many bad things about it. Luckily, I looked through my updates in the last year and Windows 10 was denied access to my computer, but that doesn't mean I'm letting my guard down for July 28 into July 29, when said program is reportedly trying to force its way on consumers. Well, I'm perfectly content with Windows 7. At this moment, I am taking steps to make sure that, on the 29th (Friday), I will wake up knowing that my computer will still have Windows 7. I don't need to change it.

Enjoy the remainder of your summer. Drink lots of lemonade or iced tea. Go take a trip or flip a few burgers on the fire. Take a little jump in a cold swimming pool and make a big splash. You're just worth all that.

And there you are.

Trump should be heavily favored after last week, no question. The Democrats are running on nothing but the same tired rhetoric. Recent world events ought to be enough to motivate people at the polls.

As for my job search, another applicant got the job. While I'm disappointed, I learned from feedback that only that applicant beat me, and that the powers that be did deliberate on me for an extensive period after the interview, which went well. The applicant who won was already in the Brokerage department and was switching from nights to days.

In the next few months, they say that more openings might be in the offing. Stay tuned.

The Astros have been back down in recent weeks, but have gotten hot on this latest road trip. We're 7 1/2 games behind the Rangers, but are also 4 games back of the Wild Card.

If the season ended today, the Astros would not be in the playoffs. Either Boston or Toronto and Seattle are the Wild Cards.

Late news out of Liberty High: Marty Ball is no longer the assistant band director. Word is she has gone back to teaching middle school, having accepted a position in Lovejoy, TX.

Their new second assistant is Tyler Elvidge, with incumbent Zack Anderson moving up to first assistant.
